Metal Toxicity Can Affect
your Oral and Overall Health
In March of 2019, the Food and Drug Administration released this statement concerning the rise in people having hypersensitivity to the materials used in dental implant and orthotic implants.
“A growing body of evidence suggests that a small number of patients may have biological responses to certain types of materials in implantable in insertable devices”
This acknowledgement from the FDA shows that further studies and research is needed on how the materials used in implants may or may not affect the recipients overall health. This is why here, at the Lanap & Implant Center of Pennsylvania we offer our patients the ability to have Metal Free SDS Zirconia Implants. In 2009, Z-Systems, a Swiss biotechnology company, selected the LANAP and Implant Center to be one of the first U.S. specialty dental offices in the U.S. to begin beta testing its Z-Look zirconia dental implant system. Dr. DiGiallorenzo went on to educate in this Arena for many years. We have successfully utilizing an integrative approach to manage tooth replacement and tooth retention for 3 decades. We currently work with Swiss Dental Systems. Often dental offices are not able to offer a more biocompatible alternative such as zirconium implants, ceramic inlays, and glass ionomer and composite fillings based on their expertise. We look at the characteristics of our patients overall health in a holistic way. We are then able to discuss the dental options we can provide within our implant consultation appointments.
Patients who have had reactions to metal hardware or other exposures should be tested for hypersensitivity. Patients showing symptoms that could be due to metal hypersensitivity should be tested using MELISA and other indicated methods. The MELISA test is a scientifically proven test which can objectively test for the presence of titanium hypersensitivity and measure its severity from a single sample. We have found that blood-based testing may give a more accurate measurement of titanium reactions than patch testing.
Metal implants and dental materials that are causing problems should be safely removed or replaced using non-biologically active materials. Appropriate detoxification methods should be employed to help patients recover their health.
People with metal hypersensitivity may have numerous symptoms associated with an overactive immune system such:
- Migraines
- Dermatologic conditions / Skin rashes
- Emotional issues / Mental issues / Depression
- Difficulty sleeping
- Fibromyalgia
- Muscle spasms of the legs, back, neck etc
- Joint Pain throughout the body
- Exacerbation of rheumatologic conditions (OA,RA, Lupus)
- Nerve symptoms
- Cognitive fatigue and impairment

In 2009, Z-Systems, a Swiss biotechnology company, selected the LANAP and Implant Center to be one of the first U.S. specialty dental offices in the U.S. to begin beta testing its Z-Look zirconia dental implant system. Dr. DiGiallorenzo went on to educate in this Arena for many years.
Since then, Dr. DiGiallorenzo has utilized several generations of metal-free implant designs. Dr. DiGiallorenzo is a specialist in periodontics and dental implantology. He has been placing implants for over a 2 decades while incorporating nutrition and lifestyle risk factor analysis in his approach for over 25 years. He also integrates growth factors such as PRGF into each indication to optimize healing. “When it comes to the use of ceramics in dentistry, there is a significant history,” Dr. DiGiallorenzo said. “Zirconium dioxide is proving to be particularly well-accepted and proven in dental implantology, and I foresee it becoming as accepted in implantology circles as ceramics are in general and cosmetic dentistry circles.” The number of holistic, metal-free dentists continues to increase, Dr. DiGiallorenzo said. Currently, there are about 5,000 practitioners nationwide.
“Many of the leading manufacturers of dental implants are coating titanium with zirconium to generate improved biologic outcomes,” he said. “Since I began offering the metal-free option in my office, the results have been improving with each generation with phenomenal hard and soft tissue integration.” Dr. DiGiallorenzo has developed clinician outreach in the U.S. with other clinicians, and he has created a public awareness campaign. He also created a clinical review board to gather data on clinical success, which was presented at two national symposiums in 2009.
