Hi, I'm Dr. DiGiallorenzo of the LANAP and Implant Center. Today I wanted to discuss a little bit about our long-term findings on the LANAP procedure. Typically, patients come in and they ask, “How can I avoid surgery?” And one of the things, after being in practice 25 years and being a third-generation dentist, commonly we would find patients had high fear of surgery, were very concerned about the time that it took, and had really very awful experiences in the past. A lot of scraping, a lot of pain associated with the periodontal procedures that were necessary. So really, one, I wanted to talk to the benefits of the LANAP procedure. Clearly, if we look just the difference in the procedure, we can see here that this is a scalpel and this would be something that was traditionally used in surgery, particularly in the periodontal aspect of how we're going to treat the disease process.
It essentially required cutting and suturing. Very painful. Multiple procedures. With the advent of LANAP, which we've been utilizing this procedure for over 10 years, we see a much more kinder, a much gentler approach. This is the fiber tip, this is the handpiece, and this energy, as we call it, is introduced between the tooth and gum to facilitate regeneration. So there's no cutting, there's no suturing. We can facilitate the process over and over, so you can have LANAP completed over and over. The delivery of the therapeutic energy that's delivered is only beneficial to the human body, the cellular activity, and will create consistent improvements in the periodontal parameters.
So we've had just extremely good success with LANAP. We can do the procedure in one visit, so you don't have to tie up a lot of time. It's an interactive procedure. It's not cutting, so the body will actually regenerate the bone and the soft tissue. And it's just been a very important change philosophically in how we're going to remediate chronic inflammation in the body. So, the good news is that we just don't have to cut anymore, and that makes a big difference in outcome for our patients.

At the LANAP and Implant Center, we utilize a no-cutting, no-stitching, state-of-the-art technology, utilizing a dental laser called LANAP. That stands for Laser-Assisted Periodontal Procedure. In the past 30, 40 years ago, in the case of severe gum disease, gum surgery was essentially the only way to treat severe periodontal problem. However, it comes with many drawbacks. The gum surgery a lot of times can cause additional sensitivity to the teeth, gum recession, and also, although it can take care of the infection, in itself it's a destructive surgery. LANAP is a minimally invasive way to, as opposed to the traditional gum surgery, to take care of periodontal disease in an effective manner. The laser is selectively attracted to the bacterial wavelength, so it goes down under the gum and zaps all the bugs away. Studies have shown that LANAP is not only just effective at treating severe periodontal problems, but also gives a chance for the periodontal tissue including bones, cements, and the periodontal ligament to regenerate back.
Okay, so you can in fact expect a certain level of regeneration after the LANAP, whereas the traditional gum surgery is completely resective. A lot of times, you'll end up losing more bone at the cost of the infection control.
- Painless – We won’t do any cutting, so you won’t need any stitches. Both your treatment and your recovery will be comfortable.

In addition to laser gum disease therapy with LANAP, other treatment options may include:
