Insufficient Dental Care
Can Lead to
Peri-Implantitis
|
Dental implant-supported crowns offer aesthetic, functional and natural-feeling tooth replacements for our patients. Dental implants have transformed reconstructive options and here at the LANAP & Implant Center of Pennsylvania, we can offer single to full mouth remediation of a patient’s dentition. Dental implant patients must be seen by a periodontist and have routine scheduled cleanings throughout the year to ward off peri-implantitis. If a patient is not compliant with their dental office routine scheduled cleanings, they will find that they have severely compromised the long-term success of their implant dentistry.
Peri-implantitis, a condition where tissue and bone around dental implants becomes infected and currently there’s no reliable way to assess how patients will respond to treatment of this condition. Peri-implantitis can lead to progressive bone loss, bleeding, pus and eventual loss of the dental implant and associated crowns or dentures that they support. It starts as a bacteria that forms in the gums around the implant. In many ways, it is similar to gum disease in that it causes damage to the gums and teeth around it. Getting dental implants, however, does not mean that you are going to get peri-implantitis. It is avoidable and easily treatable if caught quickly. Most experience swollen gums, leading to tenderness and sensitivity in the mouth. The longer the infection goes untreated, however, the more serious the side effects will become. Ultimately, dental implants can be lost and bone structure damaged. Replacement of a new dental implant at the previously damaged site is often challenging because of poor bone quality and delayed healing. Preventive implant maintenance and long-term management of peri-implantitis becomes part of a patient’s advised routine practice after implant reconstruction. If you have dental implants it is essential that you see a periodontist and have routine scheduled cleanings throughout the year. Peri-implantitis can be made worse by smoking, alcohol and drug use. Consult with Dr. DiGiallorenzo and Dr. Hsu for more information on how to adopt healthy dental habits and follow our USA Bio Health protocol.
Here are a few symptoms related
to peri-implantitis:
- Inflammation causes redness, swelling, and pain of the gum tissue around the implants.
- Receding gum line. The location of gum that the implant has been placed into grows bigger and deeper.
- Loosening of the implant, exposure of the implant threads.
- Pus discharge from within the gums around the implant. It may be a very unpleasant taste rather than something you see.
- Bone deterioration is usually unseen but painful. Often felt as soreness in the jaw.
- Bleeding occurs when the gums are infected. There are no situations where bleeding gums are healthy or to be expected.
Call our office to schedule an appointment with Dr. DiGiallorenzo or Dr. Hsu if you have pain or discomfort around your dental implants.

Zirconia Implants
We Are an Expert
Zirconia Implant Dentist
|
Dr. DiGiallorenzo and Dr Henry Hsu have over three decades of combined experience. In 2009, Z-Systems, a Swiss biotechnology company, selected the LANAP and Implant Center to be one of the first U.S. specialty dental offices in the U.S. to begin beta testing its
Since then, Dr. DiGiallorenzo has utilized several generations of metal-free implant designs. Dr. DiGiallorenzo is a specialist in periodontics and dental implantology. He has been placing implants for over a 2 decades while incorporating nutrition and lifestyle risk factor analysis in his approach for over 25 years. He also integrates growth factors such as PRGF into each indication to optimize healing. “When it comes to the use of ceramics in dentistry, there is a significant history,” Dr. DiGiallorenzo said. “Zirconium dioxide is proving to be particularly well-accepted and proven in dental implantology, and I foresee it becoming as accepted in implantology circles as ceramics are in general and cosmetic dentistry circles.” The number of holistic, metal-free dentists continues to increase, Dr. DiGiallorenzo said. Currently, there are about 5,000 practitioners nationwide.
“Many of the leading manufacturers of dental implants are coating titanium with zirconium to generate improved biologic outcomes,” he said. “Since I began offering the metal-free option in my office, the results have been improving with each generation with phenomenal hard and soft tissue integration.” Dr. DiGiallorenzo has developed clinician outreach in the U.S. with other clinicians, and he has created a public awareness campaign. He also created a clinical review board to gather data on clinical success, which was presented at two national symposiums in 2009.
Zirconia Dental
Implant Benefits
As part of our commitment to biologically based therapy, the LANAP and Implant Center has been providing a metal-free alternative to titanium implants for a decade now. This may be a better option for many patients who are sensitive to metals, have autoimmune diseases, and chronic inflammatory diseases. The Swiss Biohealth protocol has been a tremendous advance in the design and management of risk factors. Patients travel from all over the country for Dr. DiGiallorenzo’s expertise.
According to Dr. DiGiallorenzo “ We look at many different factors when considering whether a patient is an ideal candidate for zirconium implants”. Zirconium is a wonderful substitute because it’s alloy-free and immunologically neutral.
It is estimated that approximately four percent of Americans have titanium sensitivity. Diagnosis of this condition can be confirmed through blood, muscle or patch testing. Whether you suffer from a sensitivity to titanium or just prefer to use metal-free options whenever possible, metal-free implants offer clear benefits:
- Zirconia dental implants are biocompatible with your gum and bone tissue. The gums grow onto cells adhere particularly well, thereby closing the gap for any bacteria that could enter into the blood circulation via the gums.
- Traditional implants can sometimes leave a darkened area along the gum line. Zirconia better matches the color of your natural tooth roots, which gives you a more aesthetic result.
- Zirconia can actually discourage plaque and which lowers your risk for future gum disease. Zirconium implants are far less reactive to changes in the local environment .
- Zero temperature increase in surrounding bone to electromagnetic environmental influences.
Designed by Dr. Volz these dental implants are a 3rd generation design incorporating the best aspects of titanium implantology with the noted biological benefits of zirconium.
Thanks to the enhanced design of the Swiss biohealth implants, Dr. DiGiallorenzo is much more comfortable providing immediate replacement solutions so you can load the prosthetics and provide teeth the same day. Dr. DiGiallorenzo states, “I now have the unique opportunity to remove problem areas, such as failing metal implants, ischemic osteonecrosis or failed root canals and insert the ceramic implants in one single treatment. This approach removes toxicity immediately allowing the body to rebound within hours. Systemic stress is eliminated and the implants can reliably heal in place.”
