Cancer Treatments
Do Affect
Your Oral Health
Cancer treatments affects your oral health in a multitude of ways. The deleterious effects can be lasting and permanent. It is important to initiate a protocol to help combat the adverse effects immediately. Chemotherapy and radiation will reduce your immune response and disrupt your endocrine system creating susceptibility to all facets of dental disease and adverse outcomes such as thrush( oral fungal infections), tooth loss, decay, periodontal disease, dry mouth, and painful oral lesions related to viral, bacterial and immune related events. Critical cellular cofactors and enzymes become deficient. The electrical system of the body can become unbalanced and disrupted.
Immune enhancement and rebalancing can
include :
  • Supportive biohealth iv or oral supplementation and nutrition including high dose Vit D3/K2, VIT C, GLUTATHIONE, PROBIOTICS, COQ10, and B VITAMINS.
  • Stress reduction protocols / meditation
  • Acupuncture
  • Hyperbaric oxygen
  • Ozone
  • Myofascial Therapy
  • Infrared sauna
  • Organic diet
From an oral perspective, maintaining a oral healthy environment can and should include:
  • Probiotic troches/ mints
  • Regular maintenance
  • Coconut oil pulling
  • MI Paste to restore calcium ions to the tooth surfaces
  • Xylitol gums and mints
  • Treatment to remediate inflammation
Cervical Carie’s or root surface decay causes decay below the gum line. This is a very common post cancer treatment finding.
This is difficult to treat and begins the death spiral of the dentition. Current therapeutic options can include root canal, surgical intervention and then a crown. This often is not the best option. Thousands of dollars of therapy with a poor long term prognosis. This may not alleviate the problem, as it is a systemic issue. Therefore, early interventional tooth replacement utilizing metal free options can be a more substantive long term approach from a susceptibility, longevity and cost perspective.
Many treatments can be initiated to deal with post therapeutic oral lesions.
If you have been struggling with your oral health post cancer we are happy to help. Please give our offices a call at either 570-322-4741 in South Williamsport, Pa. or 610-409-6064 in Collegeville, Pa. for an appointment.
