Hi, I'm Dr. David DiGiallorenzo of the LANAP and Implant Center. Today I'm just going to talk briefly about metal-free dental implants and metal-free dentistry.

Our goal at the LANAP and Implant Center is to create therapeutic endeavors that are as minimally invasive as possible. As well, we want the reactivity of the materials and the toxicity of the materials to be as low as possible.

About seven years ago, I was one of the first practitioners to begin to utilize zirconium dental implants once they were FDA approved in the US market. These implants are not for everyone. Here's how I'll state zirconium implants. When you have the perfect bite, the perfect bone, the perfect occlusion, and the perfect health, you are a super candidate for zirconium implants.

But again, many people come in and they ask for metal-free dentistry when they are missing one tooth. I look around their mouth and they have old amalgam restorations. They have old crowns with mixed metals. So the therapeutic benefit of having a dental implant that is metal-free when they have a mouthful of metal that could be posing some issues isn't really a valuable option at that moment. Each patient is unique, their health is unique, their symptoms are unique, so we need to really fashion treatment plans that are best suited for that patient.

Traditionally, what patients think when they think about full-mouth reconstruction is complete denture. We go many steps above and beyond that. Our full-mouth reconstructions utilize the help of dental implants, and we have different levels of full-mouth reconstruction, ranging from good, better, or best, to best suit your needs. The conventional therapy for full-mouth reconstruction, which is a complete denture, does not offer much functionality, and we understand that. That's why, with the help of dental implants, we are able to restore not just the aesthetics, but also the functionality and what I like to call convenience.

With the good option of dental implants, we utilize two implants. Two implants are placed at your canine position, and these implants will act as buttons to lock your dental implants in. With the better option, we utilize four implants as opposed to two to better lock your dental implants in, and at the same time, of course, you'll be able to regain even additional functionality. With the best implants, we utilize anywhere between six to eight implants for each arch. In that situation, we can fabricate a prosthesis, in essence a dental bridge, that composed of all your teeth and that are cemented, fixed in place.

We can place overdentures over dental implants and your remaining teeth to give you a completely secure set of teeth. These dental implant dentures make chewing, speaking, kissing, and other activities easier and more pleasurable.

We offer two types of overdentures:

  • Implant-Retained Dentures – These dentures require two implants to be placed in your jaw. We’ll fit the implants with balls that will snap into a matching part on your denture to hold it in place. For most patients, this is enough.
  • Implant-Supported Dentures – Some patients who continue to experience pain when biting need implant-supported dentures. These dentures attach to a metal bar that is secured in your jaw with implants. Implant-supported dentures require four or more implants per arch. For some patients they are a better, more comfortable option for denture security.
