Periodontal Disease and Your Oral Health

More than once on this blog we’ve mentioned how dedicated Dr. DiGiallorenzo is the total health of his Philadelphia area patients. But that commitment isn’t just limited to nutritional advice or metal free dental implants—it’s also a big part of why regular dental exams and cleanings are so important. As The Wall Street Journal reported last year, an oral health concern as common as periodontal disease shares a strong connection with overall wellbeing. Medical conditions as diverse as heart disease, stroke, pneumonia, diabetes, and pregnancy complications, among others, have all been tied to periodontal disease.

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Also known as gum disease or gingivitis, periodontal disease is an infection caused by the buildup of harmful bacteria and plaque. In its earliest stages, the symptoms of periodontal disease may only include red or sensitive gums, but if left untreated can become much more serious.

One way it does this is by breaking down the gum tissue surrounding teeth, creating pockets. Bacteria and plaque can use these pockets to enter the bloodstream, potentially resulting in one of these more serious health problems.
