Lesser Known Threats to Liver Health as You Age

It’s common knowledge that the liver plays a vital role in detoxification in the body. This amazing organ aids in the filtration of innumerable elements every day, including everything from pesticides on food and environmental toxins to BPA found in plastic bottles and some canned foods. As we grow older, our liver becomes less capable of performing its duties and, therefore, must be specially cared for as we age. At LANAP & Implant Center of Pennsylvania in Collegeville, PA and Williamsport, PA, Dr. David DiGiallorenzo and his team offer a comprehensive range of general wellness services, including support for the liver at all stages of life.

Helping Your Liver Help You

Every day, your liver undergoes nearly ceaseless exposure to toxins absorbed in multiple ways, whether it is the food we eat, the beverages we drink, the medications we take, or the air we breathe. As this organ ages, its ability to filter and eliminate these toxins is diminished, making it incredibly important to pay special attention to its status throughout our lives. Individuals who are overweight or have excess fat in their abdomen are at a particularly high risk for developing a serious condition known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD.

NAFLD is the most common condition affecting the liver in the U.S., and it can lead to life-threatening diseases like cirrhosis, end-stage liver disease, and cancer of the liver. NAFLD is typically caused by obesity and the resulting buildup of triglycerides that fail to circulate out of the liver as well as the development of insulin resistance. As the liver affected by NAFLD ages, it gradually loses its ability to respond to the signals associated with insulin levels.

Two primary factors are held responsible for this serious threat: a high-fat diet and exposure to or reabsorption of toxins by the liver. In addition to decreasing the amount of fat we eat and taking care to include antioxidants as a part of our daily diet, exercise to reduce abdominal fat is strongly recommended. If insulin levels or cholesterol prove to be abnormal, these issues should be addressed as well. Dr. DiGiallorenzo can help you develop a plan that nurtures the health of your liver for life.
