Learn the Connections between Periodontal Disease and Women in the Philadelphia Area

Periodontal disease is the most common ailment among adults, affecting nearly 80% of the population in various stages; this is why r. David DiGiallorenzo is committed to treating the problem with a wide variety of effective therapies before it can progress to more destructive stages. However, studies have shown that the unique circumstances women face over the course of their lives can open them up to an increased risk of contracting the disease. At our Collegeville and Williamsport offices, our team takes great care to keep our patients informed throughout the years, which is why below, we’ve included several situations that may negatively affect women when it comes to threat of periodontal disease. These include:

During puberty, blood circulation to the gums is increased, which can cause sensitivity and lead to an increased risk of periodontal disease. Practicing a diligent oral health routine is critical at this time to stave off the threat of infection.

Many women experience what is commonly known as menstruation gingivitis. Basically, over the course of a few days, common symptoms of periodontal disease are experienced, including swollen gums, bleeding, and sores inside the mouth. Usually, this clears up once a woman’s period has started, but if symptoms persist, don’t hesitate to call Dr. DiGiallorenzo for advice and assistance.

When it comes to pregnancy, periodontal disease can have adverse effects – studies have shown that women with periodontal disease are more likely to deliver babies that are born too early and too small. While more research is needed to establish a more substantial connection, it is cause for concern. This is why women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant should undergo a periodontal evaluation with Dr. DiGiallorenzo.
