Hidden Dangers and Solutions for Dental Fear
“Oh, I can’t stand the dentist!”
“I have a dental appointment I’m NOT looking forward to.”
Our dental teams in Collegeville and Williamsport Pa.,understand that going to the dentists isn’t the first thing on anyone’s list. We’re not offended by dental fear. But new advancements in dentistry can help give you a more relaxed — maybe even enjoyable! — visit to the dentist.
Our concern is your oral health, and dental fear can have a major grip on your dental health! Some patients afraid of the dentist avoid a dental office at all costs. Unfortunately, avoiding the dentist will cost you down the road, as you increase your risk of serious problems like tooth loss and gum disease. Today we want to list a few hidden dangers about dental fear.
Higher risk of serious oral health problems!
Problems like gum disease or rampant tooth decay can create major oral health and overall health concerns. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss and can quickly take over the mouth. Gum disease also has been linked to problems like heart disease or diabetes. We can identify and treat gum disease in its early stages, using nonsurigcal options. If gum disease is caught in its later stages, it’s much harder to treat and can cause your teeth to fail. Of course, tooth loss opens up a whole new list of health concerns.
It’ll Cost You!
Dental problems do not go away on their own. In fact, they will get worse overtime. A small cavity may not seem like a big cause for concern, but that decay can travel to the root of the tooth. Root problems can be extremely painful and lead to root canal therapy. While root canals are highly successful, the treatment requires multiple steps and visits. We need to clean out the root, place filling material, and then restore the tooth with a crown. As you might imagine, the bill for a root canal is much higher than that of a filling.
As goes your teeth, so goes your health!
Your teeth have everything to do with your overall health. If you lose your teeth, it’s difficult to eat healthy food and maintain a healthy body. Denture wearers often struggle to eat the foods they love like a juicy steak. As it turns out, most healthy foods like vegetables, fruits, and nuts are crunchy and cannot be consumed without healthy, strong teeth! We dentists have known this for years. Researchers and dentists agree that living without teeth can shave 10 years off your life!
How to Control Your Dental Fear
Controlling dental fear can happen through a multitude of different treatments. First and foremost, we make sure that you are comfortable in our office. We also provide comfortable treatments like noninvasive laser dentistry. We also use a method known as sedation dentistry. We offer two different types of sedation, including oral conscious sedation and IV sedation. Using both of these methods, patients can get the care they need with the fear or anxiety. Additionally, under oral conscious and IV sedation, patients don’t have to experience the sights, sounds, or smells of the procedure.
While oral conscious sedation and IV sedation are both conscious sedation, patients often do not remember their treatment. IV sedation works instantly, while we require patients to take a pill before their visit for our oral conscious sedation. Using IV sedation, we can knock out multiple treatments in one visit, greatly reducing your treatment time.
