While we’ve known for some time about the cyclical connection between periodontal disease and diabetes, recent studies have found some encouraging news related to periodontal therapy and glycemic control. Keep reading to learn more about what these researchers found — the results may surprise you.
Periodontal therapy can improve one’s glycemic control
The study, which was published in Evidence-Based Dentistry, evaluated 10 randomized controlled trials of adults over the age of 18 with periodontal disease and diabetes as they underwent nonsurgical periodontal treatment. What did they find? Let’s take a closer look.
Analyzing the studies led the researchers to conclude that periodontal therapy can help with short term glycemic control, as glycemic levels were reduced at the same time as periodontal status improved three months after treatment. No obvious effect, however, was noted six months after treatment.
