For many years, controversy and debate over the safety of fluoride in our nation’s water supply have produced considerable uproar among certain organizations. The general population, however, is only now beginning to understand the implications of this issue as it affects them and their families. At LANAP & Implant Center of Pennsylvania in Collegeville, PA and Williamsport, PA, Dr. David DiGiallorenzo and his team offer his patients accurate, up-to-date information and insight regarding all aspects of oral and systemic health; this includes information about fluoride in your water.
Opposition to Fluoride Being Taken Seriously
Though the topical use of fluoride for protection against cavities has long been a staple of preventive dentistry, its inclusion in the public water supply has been hotly debated as unnecessary and even harmful. The majority of authorities in the oral healthcare industry agree that the primary advantage of fluoride use is solely in topical application and not at all systemic. In fact, there is very little evidence that ingesting fluoride actually plays any role whatsoever in the prevention of tooth decay.
Because fluoride is added to the public water supply already, there is no way of controlling the amount that adults and children actually consume. All individuals are subjected to the same amount, regardless of age or how much they weigh. Some studies have produced results that indicate fluoride’s detrimental effect on bone density, as well as its ability to reduce intelligence by affecting the brain. Continuing research is exploring the connection between fluoride exposure and impaired immune systems, Alzheimer’s disease, and diminished intelligence in patients of various ages. Meanwhile, the topical use of fluoride in carefully measured amounts is still considered a reliable way to help prevent cavities in patients who are exceptionally prone to tooth decay.
