Nutrition Tips for Oral Surgery Patients

  • January 17, 2014

A balanced diet and proper hydration are important factors of any healthy lifestyle, but these necessities become even more critical following any type of oral surgery. In order for the body to heal and recover efficiently, it must be nourished from the inside out. At Lanap & Implant Center of Pennsylvania, you’ll find that Dr. David DiGiallorenzo and Dr. Bui are just as concerned about your nutrition and speedy recovery as they are your oral surgery procedure itself.

Diet’s Role in the Healing Process

When it comes to recovering after an oral surgery procedure – whether it be tooth replacement, bone grafting or a full-mouth reconstruction – many patients find that they’d rather not even think about food, much less try to eat. Though this may be your natural inclination at first, it’s important to keep in mind that the human body works to its fullest potential only when given the necessary means to do so.

Immediately following your procedure and for the first few days to a week after, you’ll stick to a diet specifically formulated for you by Dr. DiGiallorenzo and Dr. Bui. Depending on the nature of your treatment, it may be necessary to adhere to a modified diet of neutral, soft foods initially in order to avoid damage to the surgical site.

The Fuel You Need to Recover

During your recovery, keep in mind that your body is already doing all that it can to heal itself, working hard with the foods and beverages you consume. Staying in line with the post-surgery diet plan given to you by your dentist, try to get plenty of lean protein in the form of fat-free yogurts, low-fat milk, fish, chicken and eggs. Fruits and vegetables high in vitamins and minerals help immensely, so stock up on soft produce like bananas, applesauce, fruit smoothies and steamed veggies. Drink even more water than you would normally consume per day as well, remembering that drinking through a straw is highly discouraged so as not to dislodge any forming clots.

With two offices to better serve you, located in Williamsport and Collegeville, Dr. DiGiallorenzo and Dr. Bui invite you to explore the numerous benefits of nutrition therapy and overall wellness, particularly after any procedures you may need. We gladly welcome patients from throughout Philadelphia and the surrounding areas. Contact us to schedule your appointment or consultation today!
